Get a Whiff of Health from Aromatherapy

shutterstock_6481264Aromatherapy is a practice in which essential oils are used in order to improve your health and mood. It is essentially a kind of alternate medicine that many practice since it makes the human body feel good and relaxed.

Just like getting a massage, aromatherapy offers other benefits aside from making you feel good. But just how does the aroma of these oils affect your emotions as well as your mind?

Once exposed to the heavenly aroma of aromatherapy oils, their scent travels from the nose to the limbic system. The limbic system is a part of the brain that controls emotions, memories and moods, and when stimulated, it also releases chemicals that promote relaxation, healing and calmness. Endorphin is also known to be released when the limbic system is stimulated; endorphins have properties that can effectively mimic painkillers to a lesser degree. They also give a feeling of contentment, even happiness.

Due to these benefits, aromatherapy is used in order to relieve pain especially when one suffers from fibromyalgia, a condition defined by painful and achy muscles that are usually very stiff at times.

In addition, because of the relaxing effect of aromatherapy, researchers have begun studying the possibilities of using aromatherapy to promote sleep and effectively combat insomnia. Recent studies have shown that elderly people who have problems sleeping did not have problems anymore when they were exposed to the sweet aroma of lavender.

If you just want to relax and free yourself from tension and stress, then aromatherapy just might be what you’re looking for.
